    This piece measures 4 inches high and it depicts a standing Tanuki with both paws in a gesture of prayer for good luck with his ever present tools of the trade at its sides: a sake bottle and a creditor's account book. In addition he is carrying coins on his belly for prosperity.
    Japanese Tanuki, also known as a Raccoon dog or Badger and appears often in Japanese folklore with some magical ability to change its shape. It is known to be very mischievous and always getting into trouble. Tanuki is usually portrayed standing upright, often wearing a cone-shaped hat over his shoulders. Always carrying a sake bottle and creditors account book at his side like this piece. They are also known to love Japanese sake and they are often made carrying a sake bottle where they stand outside of the restaurants, bars and pubs because Tanuki is believed to travel from place to place in search of liquor which brings good company and prosperity to the business.
