Description

LEKYTHOS
'THE BATTLE OF TROY'
circa 700 B.C.
The Lekythos was a vessel used by the ancient Greeks for storing olive oil . Depicted on this vessel is the famous Battle of Troy with the famous heroes such as Achilles, Ajax, Diomedes, and Goddess Athena. The rest of the Lekythos is decorated with geometric designs. These designs are the first intimation of the ancient Greek artists' interest in the almost mathematical disposition of complex patterns and images.
This beautiful vessel has been made by Sofia Gani of SJS Designs. She is an artist who is based in Greece and her studio / gallery is situated at the foot of the Acropolis in Plaka, Athens. Here you will find her on a daily basis recreating pottery once used in the everyday life of her ancestors.
